What to visit

The Ebro Delta is a natural park
located at the mouth of the river Ebro. It is 55 km north of
Peņiscola, in the province of Tarragona.
At 7736 hectares, it is the second largest aquatic habitat in Spain
(the largest is the Doņana national park).
Formed between the 14th and the 15th centuries, this flat plain
contains large areas of crop production. In particular, alongside
areas of fruit and vegetable farming, we find extensive ricefields,
whose appearance changes according to the season. These ricefields
offer a great beauty to the area, changing from earthy in winter to
flooded in spring and then green in summer. Also particularly
attractive are its long, deserted, sandy beaches.
The action of the fresh or salt water are factors that determine the
fertility, salinity and spontaneous presence of its vegetation,
which shelters a rich and mixed fauna, particularly in terms of
birds.
Within the park itself is found the Ecomuseum
of the Ebro Natural Park. This museum, opened in October 1989, is
divided into various themed sections. The visit begins in a
typically constructed farmhouse or masía (mas), where we find the
information centre and the projection room. Upstairs there is
another room containing a permanent exhibition about the park, which
serves as an introduction to the history of the delta.
However, the highlight is the
beautiful aquarium, where we can see all the kinds of fish that are
found in the delta, and the best example of the outstanding role of
the fluvial system of the Ebro in previous times: an original llaüt,
a typical river boat of the Ebro Delta, recovered from the depths of
the river.
